The Royal Military Canal was built between 1804 - 1809 for strategic defense against invasion during the Napoleonic Wars with France (1793 - 1815). It runs for 28 miles from Sandgate (near Folkestone) to Cliff End (near Hastings), and is a fresh water canal.

Brockhill Country Park was previously part of a large estate that dates back to Norman times. The Old Manor house is now part of Brockhill School, and is located next to the park.
