Hythe Royal Military Canal
The Royal Military Canal was built between 1804 - 1809 for strategic defense against invasion during the Napoleonic Wars with France (1793 - 1815). It runs for 28 miles from Sandgate (near Folkestone) to Cliff End (near Hastings), and is a fresh water canal which is filled in from the River Rother at the western end of the canal.
The Eastern end of the canal is managed by Shepway District Council as an historic monument and visitor attraction.
